Graphic Designer

Don't judge a book by its cover? That applies in most contexts, but let's be honest...everyone judges books by their covers. If you're a nerd for typographic hierarchy, color theory, and books, then send a resume, portfolio, and cover letter to kaeley@orangehatpublishing.com.

Responsibilities:

  • Under the direction of the Art Director, use Adobe InDesign to lay out and design the interiors/covers for books of many genres ranging from picture books to YA/adult books (memoir, narrative nonfiction, fiction).

  • Use Google Calendar to accept and schedule meeting invites with members of the Orange Hat team and with authors (an Orange Hat email will be provided).

  • Correspond directly with authors/other partners in a professional but friendly, approachable, warm manner. The Graphic Designer will also be responsible for responding to all emails in a timely manner (within one business day at most).

  • Regularly update Trello task list and communicate with other staff members via that platform daily.

  • Under the direction of the Art Director, develop unique typography for covers and children’s books.

  • After hosting a meeting with the author to gather specifics regarding their vision for the book, the Graphic Designer will create unique book covers to match the mood, themes, and overall essence of the story and genre. The Graphic Designer will also work one-on-one with authors (often via email) to conduct edits and refine any designs/concepts until a final product is agreed upon by both the author and the Graphic Designer.

  • Under the direction of the Art Director and the Owner, create any necessary assets, marketing materials, and promotional pieces including, but not limited to:

    • Press releases

    • Social media announcements

    • Event banners on social media

    • Bookmarks, invitations, and sell-sheets.

  • Under the direction of the Art Director and the Owner, assist in the updating of Orange Hat's MAGNIFY catalog twice a year.

    • Fall Catalog to be distributed in July/August

    • Spring Catalog to be distributed in January/February

  • On a weekly basis (or as assigned), update the Orange Hat Publishing and Ten16 Press websites. These updates include, but are not limited to:

    • Creating graphics for the homepage

    • Updating books for sale or pre-order for both imprints

    • Updating the “Staff Picks” section of the Orange Hat site on a monthly basis

    • Updating the “Author Highlight” section of the Ten16 site on a monthly basis

  • Correctly package and finalize files for print production per distributor standards.

  • Under the direction of the Art Director, design websites through Wix, edit book trailers using either Premier Pro or After Effects, and complete any other visual projects as assigned.

  • Teamwork! At Orange Hat & Ten16 Press, everyone helps with the following tasks: packaging, shipping, launch party hosting, greeting contracted authors and walk-ins (as well as inquiring authors) in a warm and welcoming way.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • 2-3 years of relevant work experience in graphic design

  • Ability to communicate clearly, accurately, and effectively both verbally and in writing

  • Exceptional organizational skills, plus the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously with close attention to detail

  • Ability and desire to work both independently and cooperatively in a highly collaborative environment

  • Proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator (knowledge of Premier Pro and After Effects is a plus, but not required)

  • Copyediting and basic proofreading skills

  • Proven knowledge of typographic hierarchy, concept development

  • Collaborative, enthusiastic, and positive attitude

  • Flexibility to pivot when certain project priorities change

  • Passionate about books! *In your cover letter, please tell us about your most recent favorite read.

Weekly Expectations: Monday – Friday, 100% of the time in-office for the probationary 90-day period, or as determined with the Owner and Art Director. Some nights and weekend hours may be requested to help with book launch events, but they will be rare, and will be communicated in advance.
