ABOUT THE BOOK

Two creatures, one of the sea and one of sky meet at the surface, where worlds blend and merge. Both are skilled predators, swooping and diving through the waves to hunt the prey they share: Salmon. Intrigued by what they have in common and even more so by their differences, Orca and Eagle Flies High find ways to support and rejoice in one another. Their friendship grows and an epic, timeless love is born.

How Orca Got Her Spots is a story of love and friendship bridging worlds and sustaining complex ecosystems. We all carry the marks of our ancestral lineage, we are all the product of the way love blends worlds and creates new ones. Orca’s joy and resilience celebrates our connection to the land the sea and to each other, across species and across realities.

These words come from the Nuu-chah-nulth or Nootka people of the west coast of Vancouver Island. Nuu-chah-nulth means all along the mountains and describes at least fifteen different tribes who lived along the Pacific Northwest Coast, including the Makah from the furthest westward tip of Washington state.

Author and illustrator Emily Taibleson is an artist and mother from the Pacific Northwest.
